Medicare Reimbursement Information
Home blood glucose monitors are covered by Medicare for patients
who are diabetics and who can better control their blood glucose
levels by checking these levels and appropriately contacting their
attending physician for advice and treatment. Coverage is provided
under the benefit category of durable medical devices. The DUO-CARE
monitor, as a home use blood glucose test, and glucose test strips
may be reimbursed, subject to specific conditions and limitations
established by Medicare.
For Medicare reimbursement of home use glucose tests:
- you have diabetes, which is being treated by a physician; and,
- the glucose monitor and related accessories and supplies have been ordered by the physician who is treating your diabetes; and,
- you are able to operate the monitor, test strips, and lancing devices; and, capable of using the test results.
To obtain more information about reimbursement, contact your pharmacist or diabetes care supplier. For more information about Medicare: call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) or visit their website at www.medicare.gov.
Private Insurance
If you have private insurance, your insurance company might pay
all or part of the cost of your diabetes testing supplies. Contact
your insurance company to find out what monitoring devices they
provide, conditions that apply, reimbursement levels, and other
services they make available under your policy. Depending on your
insurance company policies, diabetes testing supplies might be
listed as prescription drugs or durable medical equipment. Make
sure that both areas of coverage are evaluated to determine coverage.
If DUO-CARE is not specifically listed as a benefit available
to you under the terms of your insurance policy, contact your
claims representative or insurance company liaison to request
that coverage be made available.
